Hydrophobic

Hydrophobic refers to the ability of a substance to repel water, which is manifested as the property of not easily interacting with water molecules. Hydrophobic substances are usually insoluble in water. Their molecular structures often lack polar groups and are often composed of long-chain hydrocarbons, such as fats, oils, and waxes. When these substances come into contact with water, water molecules attract each other and repel hydrophobic molecules, causing hydrophobic substances to aggregate or separate in water. The hydrophobic characteristic plays an important role in many key processes in organisms, such as the formation of cell membranes and the self-assembly of lipids. In materials science and chemical engineering, hydrophobicity is also often used to design waterproof coatings and other applications.
