Fumed Silica is commonly used as a reinforcing filler in Room-Temperature Vulcanizing (RTV) silicone rubber and Liquid Silicone Rubber (LSR) formulations. Here's how fumed silica is typically utilized in these applications:

### RTV-2 Silicone
1. **Reinforcement:** Fumed silica is added to RTV-2 silicone formulations to improve mechanical properties such as tear strength, tensile strength, and abrasion resistance.
   
2. **Thickening Agent:** It is used as a thickening agent to control the viscosity of the silicone mixture, enabling precise application and ensuring the desired consistency of the final product.
   
3. **Prevent Settling:** Aerosil Fumed Silica helps prevent settling of heavier components in the mixture, ensuring uniform distribution of additives and maintaining stability.

### LSR (Liquid Silicone Rubber)
1. **Improves Mechanical Properties:** Fumed silica is employed to enhance the mechanical properties of LSR, increasing its tensile strength, tear resistance, and dimensional stability.
   
2. **Reduced Shrinkage:** By adding fumed silica, LSR formulations can exhibit reduced shrinkage during curing, leading to better accuracy in molded parts.
   
3. **Thixotropic Agent:** It acts as a thixotropic agent, allowing the material to flow easily during processing and solidify quickly after application, aiding in mold filling and maintaining shape integrity.
   
4. **Surface Quality:** Fumed silica can also improve the surface quality of LSR parts, reducing surface defects and enhancing overall finish.

In both RTV-2 and LSR applications, the addition of fumed silica is crucial for achieving specific performance characteristics and ensuring the desired properties in the final cured silicone products. The concentration of fumed silica, along with its dispersion and processing conditions, play a significant role in determining the overall quality and performance of the silicone rubber.
